PARO At MAD MUSEUM 2014 

JCC and MAD Museum proudly present Dr. Takanori Shibata, the inventor of PARO, the robotic seal with a therapeutic effect. Dr. Takanori Shibata, Chief Senior Research Scientist at National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (AIST), Japan and Visiting Fellow at AgeLab of MIT, the US, who will be giving a lecture on PARO, a therapeutic Robot.

This year, Dr. Shibata will be conducting a talk about PARO and his entrance into Singapore’s healthcare markets including nursing homes and day care service centres for Alzheimer patients as a therapeutic robot made from the latest technology and Japanese design perspective, also explaining how it has been appreciated in Europe, US and now in Singapore. In addition, Dr. Shibata will also be exploring the effects PARO has on patients and what makes him so endearing. The duration of the talk by Dr. Shibata will last for about an hour with a brief question and answer session thereafter

A limited number of people will also be given the opportunity to have a hands-on experience with PARO. Dr. Shibata’s upcoming talk will be held at MAD Museum, a newly opened art space in JCC's neighbourhood. MAD Museum will be organizing the first international design fair in Asia in 2015 to nurture and develop the design of Singapore’s eco-system.

 In 2010, JCC organized an exhibition entitled “Life Innovation by Japan Robot Technology”. That particular exhibition was intended to introduce robot technology to the general public through a demonstration to students and members of the public. We are honoured to once again welcome Dr Shibata back to Singapore for this upcoming event.

Recently, Singapore’s Minister of Health, Mr Gan Kim Yong, greeted PARO at a convention which was organized by the Agency for Integrated Care (AIC). PARO was used experimentally for a year, in collaboration with the Alzheimer's Disease Association in Singapore
